Chemistry for Physiology
Amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins. As more amino acids are added, the protein chain tends to fold upon itself in a characteristic way. This characteristic of a protein is called the:
Primary structure
Secondary structure
Tertiary structure
Quaternary structure
The shape produced by folding is the tertiary structure. Primary structure is the sequence in which the amino acids are joined. Secondary structure is any repetition of the primary structure. Quaternary structure does not exist.

What may be said of isotonic solutions? They have:
Had added the same number of moles of solid substance per volume of solution
The same number of grams of solute per volume of solution
The same percent concentration
The same number of dissolved particles per volume of solution
Choice A is incorrect as a mole of an ionic substance will result in 2 or 3 osmoles of dissolved particles. (Choices B and C are incorrect.)

Lactose is a sugar with a molecular formula C
12
H
22
O
11
. Given that the atomic weights are C = 12, H = 1 and O = 16, what is the weight of 1 mol of lactose?
3.42 g
34.2 g
342 g
3420 g
Mass of 1 mol of lactose = (12 × 12) + (22 × 1) + (11 × 16) = 144 + 22 + 176 = 342 g.

Which of the following is true of metal elements?
The four most common metal elements in the body have the symbols C, H, O and N.
They form compounds with non-metals.
When they form compounds, they gain electrons.
In the body, ions of metal atoms have a negative charge.
All other choices are wrong.

Which is the best definition of an electrolyte?
An atom that dissociates into ions
A substance that will conduct electricity when it is dissolved in water
Molecules of solid, liquid or gas that will conduct electricity in solution
A substance that will conduct electricity
This is a definition of electrolyte. Choice C is restricted to molecules; and there must be a solution involved, so D is wrong.

By what name is the movement of solute particles through a selectively permeable membrane, in the direction of their concentration gradient, known?
Diffusion
Dialysis
Osmosis
Filtration
While the solute particles are indeed diffusing through the membrane, the presence of a membrane makes dialysis the appropriate term to use. Diffusion is also applied to the movement of particles within a solution even when they do not cross a membrane.
