Prime Minister Liz Truss and her government collapsed Thursday with her sudden resignation announcement after six turbulent weeks in office, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.

Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka, has been awarded the 2022 Booker Prize for Fiction for the novel ‘The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida’. The novel is a metaphysical thriller that tells the story of the photographer of its title. Karunatilaka has become the second Sri Lankan-born author to win, following Michael Ondaatje, who won in 1992.

‘World Mental Health Day’ is marked every year on October 10 to raise awareness about mental health around the world. Every year since 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) has organized a global campaign for World Mental Health Day. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2022 is ‘Make mental health for all a global priority’.

The World Post Day is celebrated every year on October 9 across the globe to create awareness on the role of the postal sector in daily life. This year’s theme for the day is ‘Post for Planet’. It is also the anniversary of the founding of the Universal Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland, in 1874. With more than 1.5 lakh post offices, India Post is the largest postal network in the world.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 was awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and bio-orthogonal chemistry”.

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2022 is awarded to the French author Annie Ernaux “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”.

The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organization Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties.

The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Svante Pääbo “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution”.
