The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945, when 51 countries signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, California.

The Maastricht Treaty, signed in 1992, established the European Union (EU). It created a single currency (the euro), a common foreign and security policy, and cooperation in the areas of justice and home affairs. The treaty also laid the groundwork for a more integrated Europe, setting the stage for future expansions and deepening of EU policies.
