John Bull is a national personification of England, similar to the American ‘Uncle Sam’. He is usually depicted as a stout, middle-aged, country-dwelling, jolly and matter-of-fact man. He originated in satirical works of the early 18th century and would come to stand for “English liberty” in opposition to revolutionaries. He was popular through the 18th and 19th centuries until the time of the First World War, when he was generally stopped being seen as representative of the “common man”.

Old Glory is the nickname for the flag of the United States of America. It was first used in the 1810s.

The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It has been described as “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world”. The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506. It is currently on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The United Kingdom officially left the European Union on 31 January 2020, after 47 years of membership. The UK had been a member of the EU since 1 January 1973. The decision to leave the EU was made in a referendum held on 23 June 2016, in which 52% of voters voted to leave. The UK’s withdrawal from the EU was a complex and controversial process, which was marked by political and economic uncertainty. The UK’s relationship with the EU after Brexit is still being negotiated.

Bangladesh celebrates its independence day on March 26th. This is the day in 1971 when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan. The Bangladesh Liberation War lasted until December 16th, 1971, when Bangladesh finally gained its independence.
