The USA exploded its first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert on July 16, 1945. The test was code-named Trinity. The bomb was detonated at a remote location on the Alamogordo Bombing Range, now known as the Trinity Site. The explosion created a mushroom cloud that was visible for 250 miles.
