The site is situated on a hilltop overlooking the valley of the Panjkora River, and it is considered one of the best-preserved Buddhist monasteries in the region. Takht-i-Bahi, which means “Throne of Origins” in Persian, was founded in the 1st century CE and served as a major center of Buddhist learning and monastic activity for more than 500 years. The complex consists of a number of stupas, chapels, and monastic cells, as well as a large assembly hall and other structures. Takht-i-Bahi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 due to its outstanding cultural and historical significance.
