The Abundance The meaning of Surah Al Kausar is The Abundance. It is the 108th surah of the Quran and is one of the shortest surahs, with only three verses. The surah was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the early days of his prophethood, when he was facing persecution from the Quraysh. The surah is a reminder of Allah’s (Glorified and Sublime is He) favor upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his community. The surah begins with the words “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Indeed, We have given you [O Muhammad] al-Kawthar.” Al-Kawthar is a river in Paradise that is described as being vast and flowing with pure water. It is a symbol of the abundance of blessings that Allah (Glorified and Sublime is He) has bestowed upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his community. The second verse of the surah commands Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to offer salah (prayer) and sacrifice. Salah is the obligatory prayer that Muslims perform five times a day. Sacrifice is the act of slaughtering an animal as an act of worship to Allah (Glorified and Sublime is He). These two acts of worship are a way for Muslims to show their gratitude to Allah (Glorified and Sublime is He) for His blessings. The third and final verse of the surah tells Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that his enemies will be cut off. This is a reminder that those who oppose Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his message will ultimately be unsuccessful. Surah Al Kausar is a reminder of Allah’s (Glorified and Sublime is He) favor upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his community.
