May 4, 1886 The Haymarket Affair was a violent confrontation between workers and police that took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886. It was the culmination of a series of protests by workers in Chicago who were demanding an eight-hour workday. The protests turned violent when someone threw a bomb at police, killing seven officers and injuring many others. In the aftermath of the bombing, eight anarchists were arrested and charged with murder. Four of the anarchists were hanged, and the others were sentenced to prison. The Haymarket Affair was a turning point in the history of the labor movement in the United States. It led to the formation of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the passage of laws that limited the workday to eight hours. International Workers’ Day is now a public holiday in many countries around the world. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of the labor movement and to continue to fight for workers’ rights.
