Who first proposed the theory of an expanding universe?
The theory of an expanding universe was first proposed by Edwin Hubble in 1929. He discovered that the light from distant galaxies was shifted towards the red end of the spectrum, which is a phenomenon known as redshift. Redshift is caused by the expansion of space, so Hubble’s discovery provided evidence that the universe is expanding.

Which type of radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer?
The upper layer of the atmosphere is called the stratosphere. The stratosphere contains ozone, which is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. Ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Ultraviolet radiation is harmful to life on Earth because it can damage DNA.

Which instrument is used to measure specific gravity of liquids?
A hydrometer is an instrument used to measure the specific gravity of liquids. It is a weighted glass tube with a scale marked in specific gravity units. The hydrometer is placed in the liquid to be measured, and the point at which it floats is read off the scale.

Materials for rain-proof coats and tents owe their water-proof properties to:
Surface tension is the force that causes the surface of a liquid to behave like an elastic membrane. It is this force that allows rain-proof coats and tents to keep water out. When water hits the surface of a rain-proof coat or tent, the surface tension of the water causes it to bead up and roll off. This prevents the water from soaking through the material and getting the person wearing the coat or tent wet.
