He is a graduate of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul and was commissioned in the Frontier Force Regiment in 1986. He has held a number of command and staff appointments, including Director General Military Intelligence, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence, and Corps Commander XXX Corps. He was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on November 29, 2022.
