Shahab ud-Din Mohammad  The real name of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan was Shahab ud-Din Muhammad. He was born on January 5, 1592, in Lahore, Pakistan. He was the third son of Mughal emperor Jahangir and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan ascended to the throne in 1628 and ruled for 30 years. He is best known for his patronage of the arts and architecture, and for building the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum for his wife. Shah Jahan was overthrown by his son, Aurangzeb, in 1658 and imprisoned in the Agra Fort until his death in 1666.
