What feature distinguishes pacemaker cardiac cells from other cardiac cells? Pacemaker cardiac cells:
Require a stimulus from the vagus nerve in order to reach threshold; other cardiac cells do not.
Reach threshold with much weaker stimuli than other cardiac cells.
Have gap junctions, while other cardiac cells do not.
Do not require an external stimulus to reach threshold, while other cardiac cells do.
Pacemaker cardiac cells are self-rhythmic. They will contract in the absence of stimulation from the nervous system. External stimulation will make them contract at a faster (or slower) rate.

What effect will increasing the concentration of red cells in blood have? It will:
Decrease blood viscosity and increase aortic pressure
Increase blood viscosity and decrease aortic pressure
Increase blood viscosity and increase aortic pressure
Decrease blood viscosity and decrease aortic pressure
Viscosity will increase as the number of RBC increases. This will also increase the resistance to flow so BP in the aorta will increase a bit.

In which of the four lists below are the types of capillaries listed in order of permeability with the first being the least permeable and the last being the most permeable type of capillary?
Blood-brain barrier capillaries, continuous capillaries, fenestrated capillaries, sinusoids
Continuous capillaries, blood-brain barrier capillaries, fenestrated capillaries, glomerular capillaries
Fenestrated capillaries, blood-brain barrier capillaries, continuous capillaries, sinusoids
Liver sinusoids, blood-brain barrier capillaries, continuous capillaries, fenestrated capillaries
The capillaries of the BBB are least permeable (they form a “barrier”), while sinusoids are the most permeable.

Complete the sentence correctly. The left ventricle pumps:
More blood than the right ventricle
Blood at a lower pressure than the right ventricle
Less blood than the right ventricle
Blood at a higher pressure than the right ventricle
The LV produces a higher pressure than the right in order to overcome the greater resistance to flow that exists in the systemic circuit.

What is the standard international unit of pressure?
The standard atmosphere (atm)
Millimetre of mercury (mmHg)
Pascal (Pa)
Kilopascal (kPa)
The pascal (after Blaise Pascal) is the SI unit. It is a small unit so often the multiple kPa is used.

Why is a resting arterial blood pressure (BP) measurement stated as a m aximum value and a minimum value?
BP has two values depending on whether the myocardium is in systole or in diastole. Hence these two values are required.
BP varies continuously during the heart’s contracting or relaxing. It is not necessary to continuously read all values so only the maximum and minimum are recorded.
The maximum is produced by the left ventricle in systole, while the mini-mum is produced by the right ventricle in systole. These two values provide the necessary BP information.
BP must be within this range for optimal health. BP outside this range is deemed to be hypertension.
BP oscillates between maximum systolic pressure when the myocardium contracts and minimum diastolic pressure as the myocardium relaxes. These two values measured while at rest provide information about the health of the arterial tree which is why BP is measured. BP pressure rises above the resting systolic value during exercise as it should. The other choices are wrong as they contain a nonsense statement.

The Korotkoff sounds that are listened for during a blood pressure measurement by the auscultatory method are caused by:
Turbulent blood flow in the aorta
The difference between systolic pressure and cuff pressure
Turbulent flow in the collapsed brachial artery
The opening and closing of the heart valves
Squashing the brachial artery will cause blood flow to be turbulent as it passes through the constriction. This turbulence creates sound that can be detected with a stethoscope.

If a blood pressure is stated as 120 over 80 (in units of mm Hg), this means:
Pulse pressure is 120 mmHg.
Diastolic pressure is 80 mmHg below atmospheric pressure.
Systolic pressure is 80 mmHg above atmospheric pressure.
Systolic pressure is 120 mmHg above atmospheric pressure.
The larger value (120) is the systolic pressure (i.e. at the end of ventricular contraction) and states by how much the blood pressure is above atmospheric pressure.

The colloid osmotic pressure of blood is due to which of the following?
Proteins in the blood
Proteins in the interstitial fluid
Sodium and chloride ions dissolved in blood
The water component of the blood
Plasma proteins (also called “colloids”) produce colloid osmotic pressure. There should be no proteins in the interstitial fluid.

Which statement below about vitamin K is true?
It is water soluble.
It is essential for prothrombin production by the liver.
It is part of the “extrinsic pathway” of formation of prothrombin activator.
It destroys fibrin so allowing a clot to gradually dissolve.
Vitamin K is needed for the liver to produce prothrombin (inactive thrombin). Plasmin destroys fibrin.
